When I Don't Know the Next Step

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight."

 Proverbs 3:5-6

Finding Faith When Things Feel Uncertain

A lot of us mistakenly believe that following God means having a clear, step-by-step guide laid out for us. We want Him to show us the whole journey before we even take the first step. But if you look at the Bible, you’ll see that God doesn’t usually roll that way.

Trusting Without a Map

Take Abraham, for example. God told him to leave his home and head to a place He would reveal later. Abraham didn’t get a detailed itinerary or a timeline. God just said, "Go." And you know what? Abraham went, trusting that God would show him the next step when the time was right. You can find this story in the Bible in Genesis 12:1-4.

Then there were the Israelites wandering in the desert. God didn’t give them a detailed map of every twist and turn. Instead, He provided a cloud to follow during the day and a fire at night. They only needed enough guidance to get through one day at a time. This account can be found in Exodus 13:21-22.

Don't Get Stuck Waiting for Everything to Make Sense

Sometimes we freeze up, waiting for everything to be crystal clear before moving forward. We think, "If God would just show me the whole plan, then I’d be ready to jump in." But real faith isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about trusting and letting go.

The truth is, God cares more about our relationship with Him than the end goal we’re chasing. He wants us to lean on Him daily instead of trying to manage everything ourselves. If we knew every detail, we might stop seeking Him altogether. That uncertainty keeps us close to Him.

When you're feeling lost about what to do next, focus on what you already know:

  • Keep praying.

  • Stay connected to His Word.

  • Be faithful with what’s in front of you right now.

  • Follow through on the last thing He told you to do.

  • Trust Him with what you can’t see yet.

God doesn’t usually light up the whole path ahead. Instead, He gives us just enough light for the next step. As we keep moving forward, He reveals more.

You might not know where the road is headed, but you can trust the One who does.

Questions to Think About

  1. Am I waiting for God to show me the entire plan before I take action?

  2. What’s the last clear direction God gave me?

  3. Is my fear of the unknown holding me back from stepping out in faith?

  4. How can I trust God today even if I don’t know what tomorrow holds?

A Simple Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, I admit that I often want to see everything laid out before I take the next step. I want to know the whole path. But Your Word reminds me to walk by faith, not by sight. Help me trust You when things feel unclear.

Give me the courage to act on what You’ve already shown me. Calm my fears and doubts when I don’t have all the answers. Remind me that Your plans are way better than mine and that Your timing is perfect.

Lord, help me rely on You every day. Teach me to seek Your presence more than a detailed plan. When I feel lost, remind me that You’re guiding my steps, even when I can’t see the end of the road.

Thank You for being faithful, trustworthy, and good. Lead me one step at a time, and help me follow wherever You call me to go.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.
