Don’t Let a Political Party Preach Your Gospel

“Choose this day whom you will serve… But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15

Democrat or Republican?
Red or blue?
We are constantly pressured to pick a side, to defend it, repost it, argue it, baptize it.
But the question that should burn in the heart of every believer is not, “Which party am I loyal to?”
It’s this: “Am I loyal to Jesus above all?”
Because here is the danger: if you are not grounded in the Word of God, someone else will interpret it for you, and they will often twist it to fit an agenda.
Know the Word for Yourself
2 Timothy 2:15 says, “Study to show yourself approved… rightly dividing the word of truth.”
Notice it doesn’t say, “Let your favorite commentator divide it for you.”
It doesn’t say, “Adopt whatever interpretation fits your political comfort.”
It says study.
Read it yourself. Pray through it yourself. Wrestle with it yourself.
Because both sides of the political aisle are capable of using Scripture as a slogan instead of submitting to it as truth.
One side may emphasize justice but ignore holiness.
The other may emphasize morality but neglect mercy.
But the Kingdom of God is not built on selective verses, it is built on the whole counsel of God.
Love the “Other Side”
Jesus didn’t command us to tolerate enemies. He commanded us to love them.
“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” Matthew 5:44
Not debate them into silence.
Not mock them online.
Not question their salvation.
Love them.
If your political convictions have caused your heart to harden toward people made in God’s image, it’s time to step back and examine what spirit is influencing you.
Galatians 5:22–23 tells us what should be evident in a believer’s life: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.
Scroll through your recent words, online and offline.
Do they reflect that fruit? Or do they reflect outrage and fear?
Jesus Is Not a Mascot
Both parties will try to claim Him. Both will quote Him. Both will frame Him as endorsing their platform. But Jesus does not sit in anyone’s back pocket.
"My kingdom is not of this world.” John 18:36
His Kingdom transcends parties, policies, and presidents. He cares about justice. He cares about truth. He cares about righteousness. He cares about compassion. NO earthly system perfectly carries all of that. When we start trusting a party to save the nation more than we trust Christ to build His Kingdom, we have misplaced our hope.
Guard Your Allegiance
Philippians 3:20 reminds us that our citizenship is in heaven.
That means, You can vote for someone without worshiping them. You can engage without idolizing them. You can disagree without despising them. But you must never allow a political ideology to disciple you more than Scripture does. If your news feed shapes your theology more than your Bible, something is out of alignment. If your outrage is louder than your prayer life, something needs recalibrating. If you know more party talking points than you know Scripture, it’s time to return to the Word.
Choose This Day
Joshua’s challenge still stands.
“Choose this day whom you will serve.”
Serve a party, and your heart will rise and fall with elections.
Serve Christ, and your foundation will remain unshaken.
Let your identity be Christian first. Let your love be evident to all. Let your convictions be shaped by Scripture, not by sound bites. And love boldly across the aisle, because the person on the other side is not your enemy. Sin is the enemy. Pride is the enemy. Deception is the enemy. But the person across from you? They are someone Christ died for.
Prayer:
Lord, guard my heart from political idolatry. Teach me to love people deeply, even when we disagree strongly. Give me hunger for Your Word and discernment to recognize when it is being twisted for agendas. Anchor my identity in Christ alone. May I be known first, and last, as Yours. Amen.
